What is the Civil Judge Exam?

Civil judge, judiciary exam, or the provincial civil service judicial exam is the entry-level exam for the law graduates to get selected and appointed as members of the subordinate judiciary.  These members are appointed by the state government. In every state of India, the State Public Service Commission conducts the judicial service examination. The members of the subordinate judiciary are appointed based on the civil judge exam or judiciary exam.  The judicial service exam or civil judge exam can vary from state to state.

Stages Of the Civil Judge Examination:

The Judicial Service Examination or civil judge exam is conducted in three stages-

  1.)  Preliminary Examination (Objective Type)

  2.)  Main exam (Written)

  3.)  The interview

Preliminary Examination:  The preliminary examination of civil judge comprises objective-type questions. The purpose of the preliminary examination is to screen the candidate before they appear for the main examination. 

Main Exam: The Main exam of the civil judge is subjective. The main exam comprises 5 to 6 papers and almost 70% of the questions are based on law. 

Interview: The interview is the final stage of the selection procedure of the civil judge exam. Candidates who have passed the main exam will be called for an interview. This interview adds up to the Total marks and the evaluation is based on the candidate’s general interests, personality, and intelligence. After  successful completion of the interview, you can get selected for the post of civil judge. 

Eligibility Criteria For Becoming Civil Judge:

The eligibility criteria for the civil judge exam vary from one state to another. It is required for a candidate to meet the minimum requirements such as academic qualifications, age, skills, and more. Therefore, candidates who wish to appear for the assessments, should check the eligibility criteria for their respective state before applying for the civil judge exam. 

  1. Candidates who are applying for the civil judge exam should be the citizens of India. 
  2. Candidates must have a degree in Law from a recognized institute or university by the government of India. 
  3. A candidate must fall under the age bracket recommended by the authorities. The age limit for those candidates who are applying for the civil judge exam varies from state to state.  The minimum and maximum age limit for the civil judge exam is between 19 to 35 years.
  4. A candidate must have qualified all stages of Civil Judge Examination such as Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview. 
  5. Other Skills: A candidates must have some other skills such as:
  1. Good verbal and writing communication skills
  2. Analytical, logical, and reasoning thinking
  3. Legal knowledge
  4. Good listening skills

Syllabus For Civil Judge Exam:

The syllabus for civil judge exam is broadly divided into :

  1. Civil Law
  2. Criminal Law
  3. Language Paper

Civil Judge Preliminary Exam Syllabus: 

The preliminary exam syllabus of the civil judge exam is divided into 4 parts. The preliminary exam syllabus includes sections such as Law, English, Computer Knowledge, and  General Knowledge.

Civil Judge Main Exam Syllabus:

The syllabus of the main civil judge exam is divided into four sections.  The main examination includes four papers that are essay-based.
